What does a typical day at A.R. Mays Construction look like for you?
Depending on where I am reporting to for the day, I handle my assigned task and then I try to shadow someone with experience within the company that I can shadow.
What drew you to A.R. Mays Construction?
I was drawn to A.R. Mays Construction after my interview. After we talked about what the internship had to offer me, I felt it was the best opportunity for me to learn about the construction industry.

Pima Center Commons, Earnhardt San Tan Hyundai, and Frontier Family Park

What does a typical day at A.R. Mays Construction look like for you?
I usually help my PM or APM with any tasks they have that day. If there are no tasks that day, I will ask the other PM’s on the other jobs if they have anything they need help with.
What drew you to A.R. Mays Construction?
A couple of things drew me to A.R. Mays Construction, a friend of mine interned here and he loved the experience, and A.R. Mays Construction came to the career fair at Northern Arizona University and I found that they were more welcoming than some of the other companies.
What project(s) did you work on as an intern at A.R. Mays Construction?
I worked on the FMIT Apartments, Alloy Midtown, and The Governor.
What has been your most rewarding experience interning at A.R. Mays Construction?
The most rewarding experience I found was being able to help my PM with something they’ll actually use for the project even when I’m gone, like a shipping log, expediting log, or reaching out to subcontractors.
What advice would you give for future interns at A.R. Mays Construction?
Don’t be afraid to talk to someone you don’t know, and try to get experience in everything, project management, field operations, and estimating.

What does a typical day at A.R. Mays Construction look like for you?
A typical day at A.R. Mays Construction for me consists of me being in the field at Talking Stick Golf Course in Scottsdale doing anything from submittals, RFIs, COR’s, walking the field, etc.
What drew you to A.R. Mays Construction?
What drew me to A.R. Mays Construction was the good environment that the company had, and also just being able to learn the construction process from a GC.
What project(s) did you work on as an intern at A.R. Mays Construction?
As an intern, I have worked on FatCats Surprise, and have since been on the Talking Stick Golf Course projects for a little over a whole year now.
What has been your most rewarding experience interning at A.R. Mays Construction?
My most rewarding experience at A.R. Mays Construction has most definitely just been being able to learn from a good project team. I have gained numerous amounts of knowledge from the team.
What advice would you give for future interns at A.R. Mays Construction?
My advice for future interns would most definitely be to ask as many questions as you can, and never be afraid to. No question is a dumb question because what you are really interning for is being able to learn construction inside and out.

What does a typical day at A.R. Mays Construction look like for you?
A typical day at A.R. Mays Construction can always be unpredictable. Even when you think it might be an easy day with little tasks to knock off your list, there is always something that will come up with the current project you’re working on, and you will never know what to expect. From the PM’s team perspective, they are typically between office or sites which their day can vary within. There will always be something to do/take care of and it makes the day go much faster when keeping yourself busy.
What drew you to A.R. Mays Construction?
One of the main things that drew me to A.R. Mays Construction is the type of people you work with. Everyone here has been nothing but welcoming and are always here to answer any questions we have. You can tell that employees here are well taken care of and do not distribute a toxic work environment like many companies out there. Everyone works at their own pace, and no one is hovering over your shoulders trying to micromanage you because in the end, your work will reflect in the results of your project.
What project(s) did you work on as an intern at A.R. Mays Construction?
I had the opportunity to work with Eric Loeffler at both The Isabella and The Amelia owned by Hyphen Communities. I did get the chance to visit the Governor and Alloy Midtown which was a fun experience to see a project outside of what I was mainly involved in my whole internship.
What has been your most rewarding experience interning at A.R. Mays Construction?
I believe the most rewarding experience for me personally is being able to see both the good and bad of a project. One of the first comments I heard a lot when I first started was that engineers do not understand the concept on construction because they have this mindset of a “perfect world” where nothing could possibly go wrong if you just followed the blueprints, but there is so much more to a construction than that. You come across so many issues with either subcontractors/owners and a PM has to be that middle person who can satisfy both parties while still keeping the project moving for its end date. Coming from someone who is studying engineering, this type of experience is not something I will ever find in a book or class in college, A.R. Mays Construction has given me an opportunity that has been very rewarding.
What advice would you give for future interns at A.R. Mays Construction?
Learn the Blueprints and understand the layout of the project you are working on. Even if you are lost with terminology, understanding where everything is will help visualize what you’re working with when you’re going on site walks with your team. Make lots of notes as well, do not try to memorize it all in your head … you WILL forget. Writing down what you don’t understand can help you look back on your notes when you write down its definitions and you can have this laid out as a cheat sheet as well during OAC or Team agenda meetings.

What does a typical day at A.R. Mays Construction look like for you?
A typical day varies depending on if I am in the field or the office. On office days I come in look through the photos of each job I am on in Procore to see the progress from the day before. Then I talk to my team and help them with anything they may need. When I am in the field, I usually follow around the superintendent and ask lots of questions.
What drew you to A.R. Mays Construction?
Driving around the valley I saw tons of signs with A.R. Mays Construction on them. I then looked into the company and really liked the core values.
What project(s) did you work on as an intern at A.R. Mays Construction?
I have worked on 303 Logistics Phase II, Sterling Grove, Doughbird – North Central Phoenix, and Waterston Central.
What has been your most rewarding experience interning at A.R. Mays Construction?
I think the most rewarding thing is being able to look/talk about certain things in the office with my team about a project and then apply them to the job when I am on site.
What advice would you give for future interns at A.R. Mays Construction?
Ask as many questions as you can, that is the easiest way to learn about what you are working on.

What does a typical day at A.R. Mays Construction look like for you?
A typical day at A.R. Mays Construction for me begins at the jobsite. I work closely with my PE and APM as they give me tasks and teach me how to complete these tasks. If I have a meeting I will head to the main office for the meeting and continue working after the meeting.
What drew you to A.R. Mays Construction?
The fact that A.R. Mays Construction is not a huge corporate contractor is what intrigued me originally. I wanted to start my career in construction at a family like environment with people who were willing to take me under their wing and allow me to learn from hands-on experience.
What project(s) did you work on as an intern at A.R. Mays Construction?
I have worked on Dwell Tempe, a multi-family development. So far I have enjoyed every second of being on the site.
What has been your most rewarding experience interning at A.R. Mays Construction?
The most rewarding experience at A.R. Mays Construction has been learning new things and allowing them to mentally connect to the things I have heard about or learned about in school.
What advice would you give for future interns at A.R. Mays Construction?
Be a sponge and ask as many questions as possible as there are no dumb questions. I would also say that your internship is what you make of it.

What advice would you give for future interns at A.R. Mays Construction?
If I could give any future interns any advice, it would be to pay attention and write everything down. If someone is taking the time out of their day to teach you, be here ready to learn, otherwise, you’re wasting everyone’s time, including yours.
